I'm unfamiliar with Waiheke. After googling I understand the ferry docks in Oneroa. I'm assuming the weekend's activities will be somewhere easily accessible around there? I'm looking at accommodation - it fluctuates wildly in cost.
I've never been there either, but I think MicCanberra has. Sounds wonderful but we have a clash, we are touring USA at that time.
Such a shame. Because we couldn't travel for so long we have a bank up of travel booked over the next two years.

Ha I hope I myself will be touring New Zealand then and join you guys. Of course it's too far away to say anything.
And Rosie should your grand tour includes Florida, please do let me know, I'd love to meet up with you! And you're welcome to stay at my place.

Rosie, if by Washington you mean DC and not "the state of", please contact BCinDC closer to the time of your arrival and we can arrange for a chance to get together with you. (If I am not in OZ/NZ at that time, I will definitely be there.) We are also available to give tips for visiting the area.
We were there in January. Didn't take much notice of the accommodation, but it's probably best to stay a night either side in Auckland city.
There's a really good ferry and bus network that is incorporated into the Auckland network.
The length of Queen Street was a $2 fare. The network changed to bus card fares only, no cash, because of COVID. This might change back to a combination of cash/card.
